Frequently Asked Questions
Do I really need a CPA if I already have a bookkeeper and tax software?
Software files what already happened; a bookkeeper records it. I help you decide what to do before it hits your return — how you’re structured, how you pay yourself, what you buy and when. Once your business has real revenue and real complexity, going it alone usually leaves money on the table.
What’s the difference between tax planning and just getting my taxes done?
Tax prep is filing the past. Tax planning is shaping what hasn’t happened yet — entity choices, timing, retirement contributions — while you can still change the outcome (most moves happen before December 31, not in April). I’d rather help you keep the money than tell you what you owe on it. Profit is vanity; cash is sanity.
When should my business become an S-corp?
Usually once you’re consistently profitable enough to pay yourself a reasonable salary and take meaningful distributions on top. Done right it saves real money on self-employment tax; done wrong it waves a flag at the IRS. I’ll run your actual numbers — and watch the March 15 election deadline so you don’t lose a year of savings.
I run a private practice — therapy, medical, or legal. Do you work with professionals like me?
Absolutely, it’s some of my favorite work. I help Northern Colorado practice owners structure the business, pay themselves smartly across W-2 and K-1 income, and plan taxes around a high-earning professional life — in plain English, not tax-ese.
I’m behind on my taxes or I got a scary IRS letter. Can you help — and how much trouble am I in?
Deep breath: you’re not a criminal, you’re a busy owner who got behind. That’s fixable. I handle back taxes, notices, payment plans and Offers in Compromise — and once you’re my client, the IRS calls me, not you. No judgment, just solutions.
What does “business advisory” or a fractional CFO actually get me?
A compliance accountant tells you what happened. I help you decide what’s next — cash flow, forecasting, pricing, financing, when to hire or buy. Think of it as a CFO in your corner without the CFO salary; for most owners it starts paying for itself as you cross into seven figures.
How much does it cost to work with you?
It depends on the work — I don’t do one-size-fits-all. Most clients are on a flat monthly or project fee (no meter running every time you call), and you’ll get a clear written quote up front, so there are no surprises. Request a quote.
Do you only work with businesses in Fort Collins?
Nope — I’m Northern Colorado through and through: Fort Collins, Loveland, Greeley, Windsor, Wellington, Boulder, Longmont and the surrounding Larimer, Weld and Boulder County communities. A real handshake, not a 1-800 line.
